North East Cycling Awards 2023
The presentation ceremony of the 1st edition of North East Cycling Awards was held on 4th November 2023 at Ratnamouli Palace in Guwahati, Assam. Honorable Governor of Assam Shri. Gulab Chand Kataria ji graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Honorable Minister of Transport, Govt of Assam, Shri Parimal Suklabaidya, Chairman and MD of NEDFi, Shri. PVSLN Murthy, CEO of Pratidin Time Shri Rishi Barua, India Tourism NE regional head Shri Anil Oraw and Founder Medical Director Sri Sankardeva Nethralaya Dr. Harsha Bhattacharjee were other notable esteemed guests.
The list of winners in the various categories are described below
Commute Cycling
In Guwahati there are still a lot of people who use their cycles to travel for their work or as a source of income. Most of these people are economically poor and do not have any other vehicle or cannot afford to use any other mode of transport regularly. They are captive cyclists who use their cycles for their livelihood. Since they too are part of our society and their contribution is invaluable their efforts need to be recognized.
Sudarshan Yadav uses his bicycle for his daily commute. As his family solely depends on his income and his income is low, so he can not afford any other vehicle than a bicycle. Mr. Yadav, is a senior citizen and works as a mason – Raj Mistri. He is hardworking and trustworthy person. Since he had not received any formal, institutional education in his life, so can't read and write.
Kalpana Deka is 39 years old and runs a road side paan shop at six mile area. She has a college going 20 year old daughter. A few years back Kalpana met with an accident and is currently unable to ride her bicycle but uses it to carry her items from her home to her shop.
Rejiya Khatun learned cycling during the lockdown from her friends and got a new cycle too. She now uses her cycle to travel from her home to her shop and also to meet her friends nearby. She Studied upto class 8 but dropped out due to poverty. She runs a Road Side paan shop near the National Highway at Basistha Chariali. She stays alone 1km from her shop.
In an attempt to encourage cycle commute among the economically better off people in Guwahati a Cycle Commute Challenge was organized as part of the North East Cycling Awards. This Challenge was for Cyclists of Guwahati who own a motor vehicle/ bike or can afford to use other modes of transport but still prefer to commute for their Work, Education or Travel in the City using their cycles – The choice cyclists. There are people from this segment of the population who have been commuting for their work on their cycles, this challenge was also an attempt to recognize or identify them
Debango Dutta is a student and he commuted on his cycle consistently for all the 31 days in October as part of the Commute Challenge. He rode his cycle for his regular shopping or meeting friends & family members.
He along with 2nd the contestant, he beat, were consistent for all the 31 days and had earned the same amount of points but Debango won on the distance travelled which was used as a tie breaker. Debango travelled a total of approximately 585 kms for his commute the entire month
Recreational Cycling
The recreational cyclists are people who ride their cycles for their health & fitness or adventure or competitive or endurance sports have become the most visible aspect of cycling in most of our urban areas and have played a big role in making cycling aspirational and popular among the masses. Many have encouraged and motivated their friends, family and colleagues to take up cycling as well. Many youngsters who start cycling by joining recreational cycling groups have gone on to represent their state in national and international level cycling competitions and have won as well.
Ijum Gadi is the founder of Itanagar Cycling Club as well India Cycling Community. He has been the Race Director of quite a few MTB Races in Arunachal Pradesh and has also organized many cycling campaign like Cycle To Work, Cycle For Fun, Cycle For Fitness specially in Itanagar.
Ripunjay Gogoi is an Endurance cyclist meaning he loves cycling for very long distances that tests his endurance limits. In 2023 he had completed World's Oldest Cycling Event called Paris-Breast-Paris by cycling continuously for 1200KM in 90hours. In 2022 he completed London-Edinburgh-London by cycling continuously 1500KM under 120 hours.
Pekindibo Nring have been organising various cycling races events and helped many NGOs in promoting eco friendly environment, pedal for change , go green rally, child labour awareness rally. He had also represented Nagaland in various competitions including NE Olympic 2022 in Meghalaya. Currently he is serving as a General secretary in The Gear Thrills Cycling Club Nagaland.
Gopesh Debnath is the Bicycle Mayor of Agartala. He's passionate about cycling and encourages people, including those in different departments and students at his college, to adopt cycling as a daily mode of transportation. He even involves his family, including his wife and daughter, in cycling. Gopesh has initiated various cycling-related programs and regularly takes part in cycling activities, from short commutes to long rides, to inspire others to incorporate cycling into their lives
Sports Cycling
Cyclists from the North Eastern region have been showing their caliber at national and international levels and winning medals since the last many years. North East Cycling Awards wishes to honour the talented male and female cyclists from the region in the Most Accomplished Sports Cyclist award category in the three disciplines of Track, Road and MTB
Ronaldo is an Indian track cyclist, from Manipur, who competes in sprinting events.
He became the first Indian to win a medal at the Asian Cycling Championships. He has quite a number of National Records in various Track events.
He has competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the sprint, team sprint and 1 km time trial.He also competed at the 2021 and 2022 UCI Track Cycling World Championships.
Chayanika is a Track and Road cyclist from Assam. Apart from winning medals at various CFI races she has also won a Bronze medal in the Pursuit event in Asian Track Cycling Championships in 2022.
Adonis is one of the top MTB cyclists in the country. He currently resides in Karnataka and represents that state. He has won numerous medal at Cycling Federation of India organized or recognized races since 2021.
Star is the younger of the two Narzary sisters from Tamulpur Assam who now reside in Karnataka and represents that state and has won numerous medals in Cycling Federation of India organized or recognized MTB races. Her elder sister Joysna Narzary is also one of the top female MTB racers in the country.
Irom is a Track and Road cyclist from Manipur. She has won numerous Road Cycling races in the country
Entrepreneurs
Cycle Tourism is booming across the world as the idea of moving slowly and experiencing local cuisine and culture is something more and more people are enjoying. There is also another segment of cycle tourists who wish to push themselves and experience the adrenaline rush of adventure. NE is turning out to be a popular destination for guided/supported cycle tourism. And the best thing is there are people from our region who are providing services as cycle tour operators. To bring into focus such entrepreneurs the Best Cycle Tour Operator Award category was instituted.
Brahmaputra Cycling Expedition was started by Bishwajit Bezbaruah, Debapratim Das in 2020. They promote cycle tourism in Brahmaputra Valley of Assam. They have organised 11 cycling expeditions over last 3 years and 150+ inbound cycling tourist across the country. They have created 4 Cycling circuits and ecosystems for cycling tourism. Collaborated with 4 larger cycling fraternities from Pune to bring more cycling tourist in our Brahmaputra Valley.
To develop the cycling ecosystem it is not just enough to sell the latest cycles but also educate, guide or support people to make the right choice from the multitude of cycle types, models, brands and price points. After sales service is equally important as it not just helps maintain cycles in good condition but indirectly can also encourage people to continue cycling. In the last few years many young entrepreneurs have opened their stores and some older stores have upgraded their sales and service for their clients across the region.
Spokehub Cycling was started by Ajanta Boro and Bikash Doley Besides at Guwahati in 2017. Currently they have 5 stores across the region under the same brand name. They not just sell cycles but have worked tirelessly for community development conducting cycling events, generating livelihoods by giving job opportunities to talented and hardworking youth. They have also encouraged a lot of young cyclists to take up cycling as a sport by helping and guiding them to take part in various cycling races.
Special Accomplishment
There are people among us who have accomplished or contributed something worthwhile for the society or environment or have encouraged people towards a particular important cause and have done so using their cycles. This award is to recognize and honour such people.
Kaushik Guha considers himself a cyclist and environmentalist. Since 1st January 2022 he cycles everyday and plants a tree across the city and its nearby places. He engages with local people to take care of his saplings as he does not have any funds to put up a fence around. As of today he has completed 673 days of continous plantations while cycling. He has planted more than 1500 plants till date and claims that 70% of his plants have survived. He loves and keep motivating a new generation to be involved in cycling and plantation at their Schools, Colleges, Institutions, Government and Private Office and Organisation.
Marcellina Sangma has defeated cancer twice and has developed a strong determination towards health and fitness prepared herself towards Endurance cycling and Marathon. She takes care of her business of farming and finds time to encourage the youth towards Cycling.
She has cycled under the banner of CYCLE4LIFE with 2 other riders (Vaibhav Desai & Jitin Pavithran as support team) with a noble Cause of spreading Cancer Awareness starting from 21st April’2016 – 01st May’2016 from Guwahati to Bumlapass Arunachal Pradesh 600 Kms.
Rima Trishna Haloi is a civil servant and currently posted as Assistant Commissioner , Kokrajhar in BTR Assam. She is also a martial artist and tries to inspire the young generation by giving training on Self Defense at various educational institutes wherever she is posted. She rides to the office on her cycle regularly and also does it to improve her health.
Cycling Friendly Institutions & Organisations
To recognise and honour institutions or organization in Guwahati who have encouraged cyclists or cycling among their students, staff, visitors or customers either by creating cycle parking space or providing incentives. There were 7 categories in total which included Most Cycling Friendly Restaurant, Mall, Hotel, Company, School, College/University and Hospital in Guwahati. We did not receive any nominations for the Restaurant, Hotel, Mall and Comapany categories this year but we hope we will get many in the upcoming years.
Army Public School Narangi has a large covered cycle stand for the students and teachers who commute by cycle. They also organize cycle rallies during summer camps and Annual Sports to promote cycling and its benefits. The school encourages their students to use cycle as an eco friendly means to protect environment.
IIT Guwahati has meticulously planned and implemented a vast cycling network across its sprawling campus. This network includes dedicated cycling lanes, paths, and bike-sharing stations strategically placed to encourage cycling as a convenient and preferred mode of transportation. The cycling infrastructure is seamlessly integrated with public transportation systems, encouraging commuters to combine cycling with other modes of transport for a more efficient and eco-friendly commute. They also conduct regular awareness campaigns and workshops on the benefits of cycling, safety measures, and the positive impact on personal health and the environment.
Sri Sankardeva Nethralaya Eye hospital has installed cycle parking stands inside its premises to allow their staff and visitors to safely park their cycles.
Special Recognition by Pedal for a Change
As special recognition of activities and work done by people and organization that promotes cyclists and cycling, Pedal for a Change has decided to award a special token of appreciation.
Dr. Dukhum Magu is an Orthopedic surgeon from Tawang. He has contributed immensely in the field of Mountain Biking in Arunachal Pradesh. He is the Co Founder of Monduro (one of India's Mountain Biking event) which attracts cyclists from across the country and nearby countries like Nepal and Bhutan.
Mr. Bharat Buragohain is currently serving as the headmaster of Jogesh Gohain High School in Dhemaji district. He has been serving in the school since 1991 and became its head master in 2022. He has constructed a large Bicycle Parking shed for the students that too with his own funds. Apart from the shed he has constructed a large water filter, a dining hall and library hall with his own funds for the benefit of the students.
The Education Department of the Government of Assam on 13th October gifted almost 3 lakh 70 thousand cycles for the students of class IX in government run schools across the state spending 161 crores. The Chief Minister also said that from 2024 students from class VIII onwards will also get cycles.
